Every Island is a design collective based in Brussels, investigating performativity in space through ephemeral architectures and installations.
Using ambiguity as a design tool, we think of space as scenography for transitions, of roles, of stages and of meanings. Within each project, materiality is conceived as a reminiscence of hidden memories, images, sensations.
Every Island was formed in early 2021 by Alessandro Cugola, Caterina Malavolti, Damir Draganić, Juliane Seehawer, Martina Genovesi.
Alessandro Cugola (Verona, 1993) is an Italian architect. He studied between Milan, Berlin and Brussels. He works in the field of scenography and installation art, both autonomously or through Every Island. In parallel, he collaborates with urban transformation office 51N4E, contributing to publications and curatorial projects, as well as to spatial design, on the scale of exhibitions and interiors.
Astrid Lykke Nielsen (Frederiksberg, 1994) graduated from Urbanism and Societal Change at the Royal Danish Academy and is specialized in data driven design. She combines theoretical social investigations with an artistic practice. Her research on housing for the homeless won her the New Rising Star award at the New European Bauhaus. She is co-founder of the interdisciplinary Copenhagen-based platform Manège and a member of Every Island.
Caterina Malavolti (Milan, 1992) is an Italian architect. She studied architecture in Milan and Copenhagen where she graduated on the subject of performativity of space within productive contexts. She established herself in Brussels where she works as a freelance architect for private projects on different scales and she collaborates with the Brussels architecture firm Vplus architecture, mainly dealing with public projects on a larger scale.
Juliane Seehawer (Berlin, 1989), studied Architecture and European Studies in Germany and Belgium. She has been working on the design of spaces and objects in scenographic and architectural projects in offices between Berlin, Tokyo and Brussels, among others Kuehn Malvezzi and Piovenefabi. Currently she works as a freelance architect, designer and scenographer in Brussels.
Martina Genovesi (Milan, 1991) is an Italian architect living and working in Brussels. After graduating in the international Master of Architecture at Politecnico of Milan, she collaborated with different architecture firms dealing with the topic of public architecture and shared spaces, currently with Atelier Kanal on the Centre Pompidou project. Working as a freelance architect, she develops projects of scenography and temporary architecture.
