Scaffolded Skies
What makes a rooftop is not necessarily what happens on a rooftop, but rather what one can see from there: a collection of towers, chimneys, and other metallic or tiled shiny sheets that give shelter to what’s beneath and that reflects what’s above or around, each standing out in their way, yet flattened by one's glimpse from up there.
If we are to define a rooftop or to find a use for it, we might want to start from that: by emulating the surroundings, from all those chimneys and towers, which shall be brought upstairs together with the fragments of skies which surround them, as long as they fit in the elevator.
For these fictional chimneys with no use, nor stairs, nor smoke, nor filling, we will find a new use in the meanwhile, there is the entire summertime for it. A shower, a stage, a storage, a shadow, and before that: a new rooftop to climb to.
In Summer 2023 BOZAR Center for Fine Arts opened its rooftop to let as many people as possible – Brussels residents, commuters, tourists, homebodies, exhibition and music lovers, etc. – enjoy the view of the inner city and cool off in the refreshing mist shower.
